Studi di fisiognomica amorale (studies on amoral physiognomics). A series of paintings portraying more or less animal-like individuals, as a comment on the traditional connotations of zoomorphic characters in our imagery: humans with animal features have always been depicted as evil monsters, supernatural idols or instinct-driven primitives. The widespread tendency of considering hybrid iconography in moralized terms can even be observed in scientific theory: Cesare Lombroso (1835 – 1909), one of the best known experts of physiognomics, claimed to detect inclination to crime in human subjects with zoomorphic facial features.
I’d like to define a different concept of zoomorphism, beyond moral connotations: diversity as a normal, necessary and beautiful component of our biological and social landscape.
